History of the club chair and definition

The origins of the comfortable armchair

The club armchair is a high-end armchair with a wide and comfortable seat designed in France in the early twentieth century. The origin of his name comes from the gentlemen's clubs of the French and English colonies. Equipped with armrests covered with leather most often in the form of shells, some models also have more rectilinear forms. The club armchair was formerly called "comfortable armchair" to distinguish it from the style armchair which is less enveloping and upright.

The manufacture of a club chair requires a complex and precise process that involves many trades such as design, tinkering, carpentry and tapestry. Each armchair is the result of the combined expertise of these skilled craftsmen who participate in its manufacture.

Club chair upholstery has evolved with the development of industrial techniques to include mercerized cotton, faux leather, cowhide, velvet and bycast. However, sheepskin (or sheepskin) is still used and remains the authentic coating of the club chair. It's the one we use when we make a club chair.

Vegetable tanning of sheep skin reveals natural skin imperfections through the shade, making each armchair unique. This method provides a very fine grain that allows the leather to develop a unique patina over time. Between six and eight yams are needed to dress an armchair. They are laid wet, stretched to the maximum, then contract during drying.

All our designs can be 2- or 3-seaters and custom-made.
